Osun Monarch Raises Objection Over Man’s Claim to Traditional Title in Lagos
A traditional ruler in Osun State, Oba Olukosi of Ilukosi-Ijesa, has strongly condemned what he describes as a provocative misrepresentation by an individual identifying himself as the Obi of Lagos.
The monarch’s reaction followed the circulation of an invitation to an upcoming event in the Amuwo Odofin area of Lagos, which included the unveiling of a prototype palace and the celebration of a first Ofala Festival. The invitation listed Engr. Chibuke Azubuike as the Obi of Lagos State—a title Oba Olukosi believes is misleading and culturally inappropriate.
In a public statement, Oba Olukosi expressed serious concern over what he sees as an infringement on the traditional structure of Lagos, adding that steps are being taken to formally address the matter.
“I have instructed my team to submit a formal petition against one Chibuke Azubuike, who is parading himself as the Obi of Lagos. This issue will also be presented at the upcoming Traditional Rulers Council meeting scheduled for Friday,” the monarch stated.
He went on to describe the development as a direct affront to Yoruba cultural institutions and warned that such actions would not be tolerated.
“This kind of provocation against our heritage and people will not go unanswered,” he added.
When contacted for clarification, Engr. Azubuike refuted the claim that he called himself the Obi of Lagos. Speaking to LIB, he explained that he holds the title of Obi of Ndigbo in Lagos State—a leadership role within the Igbo community residing in the state—not the traditional Yoruba title associated with the city of Lagos.
