National Grid Suffers Fresh Collapse, Power Generation Dips to Almost Zero
Nigeria was once again plunged into widespread power outage on Wednesday, September 10, following another collapse of the national electricity grid.
Between 11 a.m. and 12 p.m., total power generation across the country plummeted from 2,917.83 megawatts to a shocking 1.5 megawatts, effectively bringing electricity supply to a standstill in most parts of the nation.
The update was confirmed by Nigeria National Grid, an X (formerly Twitter) account that tracks developments in power distribution across the country. The account reported that efforts were underway to restore the system, stating in a brief post:
“System restoration is in progress.”
In a subsequent post, it was revealed that all electricity distribution companies—commonly known as DisCos—had dropped to zero megawatts of power load, with the exception of Ibadan DisCo, which appeared to retain minimal supply levels.
The latest collapse adds to Nigeria’s long-running struggle with power infrastructure instability, fueling public frustration and highlighting the urgent need for systemic reform in the energy sector.
