Lagos Police Announce Comprehensive Movement Ban to Secure Local Government Elections on July 12, 2025
In preparation for the upcoming Local Government elections scheduled for Saturday, July 12, 2025, the Lagos State Police Command has introduced stringent security protocols to guarantee a peaceful and orderly voting process. Among the measures is a complete suspension of vehicular movement throughout Lagos State from 3:00 a.m. until 3:00 p.m. on election day.
CSP Benjamin Hundeyin, the police spokesperson, revealed in an official statement that this restriction is designed to maintain safety across all 20 Local Government Areas and 37 Local Council Development Areas. The ban extends to every road and waterway within the state.
Only vehicles engaged in critical services—including ambulances, fire engines, and election-related security patrols—will be exempt from the curfew. Additionally, authorized personnel such as accredited members of the Lagos State Independent Electoral Commission (LASIEC), election monitors, and journalists carrying valid LASIEC identification will be permitted to move freely during the restricted hours.
The police further imposed a zero-tolerance policy on armed escorts and private security at polling and vote-counting sites. Politicians, government officials, and other key figures are strictly prohibited from arriving at election venues with armed guards. Use of sirens and obscured vehicle number plates near election centers is also forbidden.
CSP Hundeyin warned that anyone found breaching these regulations or engaging in electoral disturbances will face immediate arrest and prosecution.
