Rahamat Chinenyenwa Ekechi, a Nigerian woman from Enugu State, recently embraced Islam and is preparing to wed her fiancé, Barrister Muhammad Jaji from Plateau State. The wedding ceremony, known as the Fatiha, is scheduled for July 19, 2025, at Masjid Moh’d Nasir Jummat Mosque in Kaduna State.
Despite her joyous occasion, Rahamat faces family estrangement as her relatives have chosen not to attend the wedding due to her conversion. The mother of three has been open about the backlash she’s encountered online since sharing her plans.
Taking to Facebook, Rahamat addressed the criticism head-on, revealing her difficult past battle with depression, which nearly took her life. She emphasized that she would no longer tolerate judgment over her personal choices.
“Only those who truly care and know your journey understand your pain and what brings you happiness,” she wrote. “But strangers—those distant from you who don’t know your story—are often the loudest critics, attempting to control your life without understanding you.”
She continued, “People close to me know I’m not stubborn by nature. But when you only see me from afar, with no real connection or conversation, it’s easy to judge and suppress my feelings. I have faced trauma and depression before, nearly losing myself. I refuse to let that happen again—no matter what.”
Rahamat reflected on the recent weeks, admitting the challenges stirred up painful memories but vowed to move forward with strength.
“In embracing Islam, I found peace. I’m an Igbo woman and a single mother, shaped by circumstances beyond my control. I have no harm towards anyone. Today, I am stronger and grateful. La hawla wala quwwata illa billahil aliyyil azim.”
As she counts down to her wedding day, Rahamat stands firm in her faith and happiness, ready to start a new chapter.
