Farmer Discovers and Saves Infant Buried Alive in Kebbi Farmland
A farmer in Kebbi State, Kabiru Kamba, has shared the chilling account of how he uncovered and rescued a newborn baby girl who had been buried alive on his farmland. The incident occurred in the rural community of Kamba, within Dandi Local Government Area.
Kabiru Kamba recounted the event when a delegation from the Kebbi State Technical Working Group on Gender-Based Violence visited his home on Monday, June 30, 2025. The team was led by Hajiya Rafa’atu Hammani, former Permanent Secretary of the State Ministry for Basic and Secondary Education.
Kamba explained that he had gone to his farm on Friday, June 27, when he noticed a peculiar mound of soil—an odd-shaped ridge unlike the others. Concerned, he called on some passing motorcyclists to assist him in checking it out.
“As we dug, we unearthed a cloth buried shallowly in the earth, which seemed suspicious,” he said. “I immediately reported the matter to the nearest police post. The officers came quickly, dug deeper, and to our shock, pulled out a baby girl—still alive, wrapped in fabric, and crying.”
Kamba described the moment as miraculous. Acting out of instinct and compassion, he requested temporary custody of the infant.
“I didn’t do it for reward or recognition,” he said. “It was simply a matter of humanity. I was moved to take care of her.”
He also mentioned that the local government council of Dandi officially placed the child in his care, pending the outcome of ongoing police investigations.
Coincidentally, Kabiru’s wife had just delivered their own child, making it easier for them to care for the rescued infant, especially in terms of breastfeeding. The family is planning a naming ceremony for the baby on Wednesday, for which they’ve already made necessary arrangements, including purchasing a ram.
“My wife and I have welcomed her with open arms,” Kabiru added. “She will be raised just like our own.”
His wife, equally emotional, shared her joy at embracing the baby. “I had no hesitation. The moment my husband told me, I accepted her wholeheartedly,” she said. “I will care for her as I would any of my children.”
During the visit, Hajiya Hammani assured the family that their act of kindness would be reported to the state’s First Lady, Hajiya Zainab-Nasare Idris, for further support and possible intervention.
Alhaji Nasiru Idris, Secretary of the Technical Working Group, expressed deep appreciation for the farmer’s courageous and compassionate action. He praised the Nigeria Police for their prompt response and pledged the group’s commitment to ensuring justice is served.
To assist the family, the visiting team presented them with various baby essentials, including clothing, toiletries, diapers, powdered milk, a baby bed, mosquito net, and a mattress.
The case remains under investigation as authorities work to identify those responsible for the shocking act.
