Former SGF Babachir Lawal Sparks Controversy on Live TV with Sharp Words to Journalist
On Tuesday, July 8, former Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF) Babachir Lawal ignited a heated exchange during a live interview on TVC, leaving viewers stunned by his blunt response to journalist Nifemi Oguntoye.
The discussion took a tense turn when Oguntoye compared the 2019 electoral process under President Muhammadu Buhari’s administration to the 2023 elections that brought Bola Tinubu to power. The presenter argued there was little difference between the two, prompting a strong reaction from Lawal, known for his vocal criticism of the current government.
“I didn’t see much difference. Mr. Lawal, it’s the same electoral process in 2019 and 2023. I mean, it’s the same administration you served under, so I didn’t see quite the difference between what happened then and now…” Oguntoye remarked.
Lawal snapped back sharply: “Give me a break, my friend! Shut up! Shut up! Get out! How can you equate Buhari’s electoral process with Tinubu’s? What’s your problem? The Tinubu administration didn’t legitimately win the election.”
Attempting to keep the conversation civil, the journalist replied, “I’ll take the ‘get out’ because I invited you to my show, but I’m only trying to have an intellectual discussion with you, Mr. Lawal.”
Babachir Lawal, who was appointed SGF by President Buhari on August 27, 2015, faced suspension on April 19, 2017, and was officially dismissed on October 30, 2017. Recently, he left the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) and joined the African Democratic Congress (ADC), a party focused on challenging President Tinubu’s leadership in the 2027 elections.
